Action Flow Triggers: What Starts an Automation
Overview
Triggers define when an Action Flow runs. Every Action Flow begins with a fan action like a pre-save, SMS opt-in, or Instagram interaction. When that event happens, the flow is triggered instantly and all configured steps begin.
How Triggers Work
Triggers are:
Event-based (they happen in real time)
Always active (no scheduling required)
Project-wide (they apply across all your Sonikit tools)
This means a trigger will fire no matter where the action happens within your Sonikit ecosystem.
Trigger Categories
Streaming Actions
Triggered when fans interact with music through Sonikit embeds, links, and landing pages.
Available triggers:

Fan follows an artist
Fan adds a release to their library
Fan opts into saving all future releases (NextSave)
Opt-Ins (Audience Growth)
Triggered when fans share contact information.
Available triggers:
Fan signs up via SMS (only one per project)
Fan signs up via Email (only one per project)

Fan texts a keyword
Fan sends a direct message (DM) on Instagram (Pro/Enterprise)
Social (Instagram Engagement)
Triggered by social activity.
Available triggers:
Fan comments on Instagram (Pro/Enterprise)
System Events (NextSave Automation)
Triggered automatically by Sonikit.
Available triggers:
New release detected (NextSave) (Pro/Enterprise, one per project)
Trigger Rules & Limits
Some triggers can only have one automation per project, while others allow multiple. This helps to ensure automations do not overlap and run exactly as fans expect.
Single-Flow Triggers
Only one allowed per project:
SMS opt-in
Email opt-in
New release detected (NextSave)
Multi-Flow Triggers (Scoped)
Multiple automations allowed only if scope differs:
Keywords must be unique
Releases must be different
Artists must be different
Where Triggers Come From
Action Flows are triggered by fan actions that happen through your Sonikit system. This includes:
Embeds on your website
Sonikit landing pages and links
SMS interactions
Instagram messaging and comments
Important: Streaming Activity Outside Sonikit
Actions that happen directly in streaming apps like using the Spotify app or another smart link do not trigger Action Flows.
Examples that will NOT trigger a flow:
Clicking an artist follow button directly in the Spotify app
Clicking the save button on a song inside the Apple Music app
Clicking a third-party smart link
Why This Matters
Action Flows ensure:
A known fan identity
Verified interaction
Attribution to your project
Best Practices
Use Sonikit links and embeds everywhere you promote music
Avoid mixing multiple tools for the same action
Keep trigger scopes clearly defined
Test triggers before launching campaigns
